knitted metal jewelry

I have been exploring knitted metal for almost ten years.  I knit the metal freehand, using small pliers and my fingers to form and manipulate the growing shapes.

These pieces represent my interest in the knitted forms both on their own and in combination with fabricated elements.  The hollow, almost weightless knitted forms and the massive solid ones both echo and evoke each other.

The materials play with the convention that jewelry be glittery and obviously precious.  Silver is blackened, copper becomes a central “jewel.” Diamonds and sapphires hide.

But besides all that, this combination of materials and techniques seems rich and beautiful to me – something I want to wear. All of these pieces are meant to be worn.
