berry necklace

I found these Lake Superior agates in a bin at my local rock shop and was immediately drawn to them. The subtle variations in color and the odd, sometimes pitted surface really appeal to me. It turns out that they're actually pretty scarce. Also very hard, as I discovered when I had to drill them to use in this piece.

As I was working on this necklace, I was thinking about the pod forms bursting open to reveal these rosy berries, which jiggle slightly. But many people seem to see the necklace as spidery or crab-like.

I'm working on another one now -- somewhat simpler in form, with concentrated groupings of the berries. At least, that's how I'm seeing it in my head. Things always change in the making.
